Education

McDaniel College, 2010 Bachelors of Social Work, Minor in Literature Graduated Summa Cum Laude GPA: 3.95 University of North Carolina at Charlotte Masters of Teaching Middle Grades Literature GPA: 3.9 As the above information shows, I went to McDaniel College for my undergraduate degree. At McDaniel, I took a variety of courses from Social Psychology to British Literature. While my original aim was to become a Social Worker, I realized halfway through the program that I wanted to become an English teacher. I have always loved reading and writing; in fact, I wrote for the college Literary Magazine and minored in Literature. During my Senior year, I interned at a school for students with learning differences. I loved the experience and was asked to teach full-time the following year. After teaching for a year, I realized that I needed to obtain a higher-degree in education in order to teach long-term. I joined Teach For America where I taught in a Title I school and simultaneously received my Masters from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Experience

I currently teach Freshman English I, Freshman English I Honors, and American Literature at a private, Jesuit high school. In my position, I emphasize mastering sentence and paragraph writing and teach the formula for multi-paragraph essays. In literature, I focus on a variety of genres which students read for understanding and analysis. The aim of my classroom is to develop the imagination and appreciation of the written word. I also facilitate an extracurricular Creative Writing Club. I previously taught in an under-resourced public school as part of Teach For America, a highly selective national service corps of recent college graduates and successful professionals. During my time at this school, I taught Middle School Language Arts where students increased in proficiency writing sentences and paragraphs. Students wrote narrative, descriptive, and persuasive paragraphs. Literature focused on adolescent themes such as ‘choice’ and ‘exploration.’ Students grew in reading an average of two years for each year in my classroom. As a tutor, I look forward to helping others master reading and writing skills. I enjoy providing individualized instruction to students, and I like that tutoring allows me to tailor lessons to fit each student.

Hobbies

I love the outdoors and spend as much time outside as possible. I frequently go hiking and camping in my free time. I also spend much of my time reading and writing. I'm a member of several book clubs and love discussing literature. Whenever I get the opportunity, I travel. In the past year I've been to Costa Rica and have also ventured to several new states.
