Experience
I currently have close to 9 years of experience as a teacher and tutor. I began at the age of 16, working with a middle school student who was dealing with a tough divorce, and was also struggling with his Spanish classes. I continued to work with him for the next three years, raising his grades from a D, to an A, and assisting him in keeping them there throughout middle school. I have worked with clients of all ages, and expanded into working with elementary aged students in reading and math, after my summer internship in 2010. I was granted entry to an amazing program called Freedom Schools, that was sponsored through ELEV8 Baltimore. We were able to attend a week long training at the University of Tennessee where I was educated in essentials such as lesson planning as well as classroom management. After we returned, I worked as an Intern for the program, teaching an integrated reading curriculum to inner city students from ages 7 to 13. Before my internship, I worked as an Early Intervention Assistant for Baltimore County Schools at a school in Timonium. I was able to gain entry to the program due to my extensive experience volunteering in schools throughout high school. I worked with special needs and Autistic Children, and completed all of my service learning hours working with the school's social worker to create and organize group sessions, art therapy, and other classroom activities. On Saturdays, I taught 1st grade religious education, and continued to do so for five years. I began teaching at 16 as well. I am fully bilingual, and I have taken Spanish courses throughout all of my schooling to improve my grammar and understanding of the language. I now work on call as a medical interpreter, due to the strength of my language skills.
