Experience

As a dedicated teacher and a lifelong learner, I am passionate about education. I believe that the keys to success in school (and beyond) are hard work and commitment. There is nothing I enjoy more than working with students to improve their knowledge and skills, and to watch them grow and realize their potential. In one form or another, I have worked in the field of education my entire life. I have been a college mathematics tutor, a teaching assistant and tutor in a university psychology department, an aid in a kindergarten class, a private music instructor, and an educator for the National Parks Service, where I teamed up with US park rangers and administrators to develop history and science education programs for park visitors of all ages. In college I took several courses in composition and rhetoric, as well as the history and philosophy of science. Though my practical tutoring experience is in mathematics, psychology and music, the research I conducted at Towson has provided me with advanced knowledge of constructing and analyzing essays and arguments. Thus, I am also well qualified to tutor students struggling with reading and writing skills. I have a relaxed and congenial demeanor and a good sense of humor; study sessions with me are stress-free and enjoyable. I believe that people learn best if they progress at their own pace in an environment that is amicable and encouraging. Throughout my career as an educator, my methods as a tutor have always been the same. I begin by assessing the student's strengths and weaknesses. I also review the lesson material that is currently most relevant to the student's development, as well as any deadlines he/she may be facing. I then work with the student to develop a study plan and begin to execute it immediately. I provide close guidance and support for all of my students. Although identifying and correcting errors is important, I am always sure to respect the student's efforts and recognize success. Positive feedback always comes first, followed by corrections with concrete guidance and suggestions on how to improve.
