Education

Doctor of Philosophy: Yale University (Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases): 2011-2015 Master of Public Health: Yale University (Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases): 2008 - 2010 Bachelor of Science: UW-Madison (Genetics) 2001-2005 Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universitaet: 2003 - 2004

Experience

I have tutored students from kindergarten to 12th grade in chess. My proudest accomplishment is training a cohort of 1st graders with no previous chess knowledge who then qualified for the state team tournament. I entered college as a sophomore. I received 5s on all my AP courses with the exception of German. I later mastered the language when I studied abroad in Bonn in 2003. I scored over 90th percentile in both the quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). I have also published in some of the most prestigious medical journals in the world (i.e. The Lancet HIV, JAMA Internal Medicine, The American Journal of Public Health). I have also tutored undergraduate and masters students in biostatistics, a core requirement for a career in public health. I have also taught introductory epidemiology, biology, and statistical programming courses. I enjoy teaching and seeing how my students flourish later in life. My educational training has led me down an academic career path and I am looking forward to working as a scholar and a mentor to the next generation of aspiring, inquisitive, ambitious minds.

Hobbies

I enjoy playing chess. My proudest accomplishment was winning the state championship in 1999 and representing the state of Tennessee in the Arnold Denker Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada. While I am mostly inactive in terms of playing in tournaments, I still enjoy playing "blitz" or speed chess where each player has 5 minutes (or less) on the clock. I have a passion for learning languages. I grew up speaking Spanish at home but I have also mastered German and Russian. I studied German as an undergraduate and lived in Germany for one year. Nothing can be as challenging as reading Kafka in his own words. I also learned Russian during the course of my graduate studies. My dissertation research was based on data collected from St. Petersburg, Russia. I have spent a lot of time there soaking up the beautiful Russian language and culture. I also enjoy traveling. I can't say which place I have loved the most since almost every place I have been has something unique to offer. The next countries that I would like to visit are Indonesia, Madagascar, India, and Georgia. Now that I have a bit more of a regular schedule, I have taken a keen interest in cooking. While I haven't achieved "foodie" status yet, I hope to eventually learn the nuances of "molecular gastronomy".
