Experience

Hello! I am an English teacher with five years of experience teaching in one of the most successful state secondary schools in England. I taught all abilities of learners from 6th to 12th grade, and was rated as an outstanding teacher in official observations, using UK national standards. I taught English literature and English language, as well as Critical Thinking to pre-university students. Before that, I practiced law in the State of Maryland for over ten years, honing my analytical and writing skills. I am very proud that my students—regardless of their level of ability—were able to achieve better results than they were expected to, because I was able to teach them the skills they needed in order to understand, analyze, and interpret complex texts. These are the skills that your student will need in order to meet his or her full potential; love them or hate them, the requirements of the Common Core Curriculum make it clear that simply decoding texts is not enough. In order to succeed, students need to grapple with authors’ intentions, understand their context, and discuss the impact that the text has on them personally. And I can teach them how to do that, using both literature and literary non-fiction. Not only that, I can teach them how to express their ideas in interesting, coherent essays that will help them earn the grades they deserve. I can help improve their grammar and vocabulary, and get them to realize why these are so important. In sum, I can help them succeed not only in English, but in any subject in which reading comprehension and written expression are critical.
